Purpose of Magnetic Bracelets

Magnetic bracelets are used in an attempt to cure a variety of illnesses, ranging from arthritis and carpal tunnel disorder to sleep disorders. While alternative medicine companies promote these bracelets as a natural method of curing common ailments, researchers have as yet been unable to find sufficient evidence to support these claims

  1. History

    • Magnets have been used to treat illnesses since Hippocrates was practicing medicine in Greece in the fourth century, and may even have been used even earlier. Cleopatra was believed to have slept with a magnetic stone on her forehead in an attempt to prevent aging. During the 15th century, the Swiss physician Paracelsus thought that magnets worked to energize the body's life force and trigger the healing process. Franz Anton Mesmer, an 18th century physician, believed that the body had magnetic poles which could cause illness if they moved out of alignment. Dr. Mesmer also thought that he could heal patients just be touching them, believing that his own magnetic touch would affect the magnetic flow in a patient's body.

    Types of Magnets

    • Magnets that are used to treat illnesses are called static magnets and are attached to the body by tape or are placed in such items as mattress pads, belts, wraps, shoe inserts, self-adhesive patches and as part of jewelry. Static magnets are measured by units called gauss. An ordinary magnet has about 200 gauss, while most therapeutic magnets range from 400 to 800 gauss. Both bipolar and unipolar magnets are available. Unipolar magnets are arranged with a north pole on one side and a south pole on the other. Bipolar magnets are produced with north and south poles on the same side of the magnet. Static magnets are different from pulsed electromagnetic fields used by doctors to help heal slow-healing bone fractures.

    Magnet Theory

    • There are multiple theories regarding the effect of magnets on the body. Alternative medicine practitioners believe that magnets can do such things as increase blood oxygen, make body fluids more alkaline, improve circulation, decrease the formation of plaque caused by high cholesterol levels, alter nerve impulses, increase endorphins and relax muscles and blood vessels.

    Scientific Evidence

    • So far, scientific studies do not support the claims of alternative healers that magnets can cure or improve diseases and conditions. A 2001 study conducted by Mark H. Winemiller, MD; Robert G. Billow, DO; Edward R. Laskowski, MD; and W. Scott Harmsen, MS; studied whether magnetic insoles placed in shoes had any effect on plantar fascitis, a painful condition that causes heel and arch pain. The study, published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" (JAMA) in 2003, found no significant difference between patients wearing real magnets versus sham magnets. In 2003, the Cochrane Colloboration reviewed 21 studies on the effects of magnets on carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition affecting the wrist. An abstract published by D. O'Connor, S. Marshall and N. Massy-Westropp did not find any benefit in wearing magnets for carpal tunnel sufferers. Other studies have been inconclusive regarding the benefits of magnets and more research is needed before a definitive verdict on the efficacy of magnets can be issued.

    Can Magnets Help?

    • Although there is no scientific evidence supporting the claims of companies selling magnets, using magnets will not harm your health. It is possible that you may experience some benefit from using magnets, but doctors don't know if this benefit is from a placebo effect or from the magnet itself. If you use an insulin, intrathecal or chemotherapy pump or have an implanted defibrillator, you should not use magnets because they may interfere with the operation of these devices.
